The Blue Light Surf Club

The Blue Light Surf Club utilises surfing as a vehicle for delivering evidence based coping skills, psychoeducation, peer support, and respite to advance the mental health of emergency service and healthcare workers in Scotland.

What We Do

The Blue Light Surf Club's bespoke 8 week programmes have been designed based on the most up to date science to deliver psychoeducation, coping skills, peer support, and respite for emergency service and healthcare workers in Scotland. Each week addresses topics that supports participants to better manage the stressors inherent in their valuable work, and to enjoy their wider lives to the fullest. This evidence based curriculum is combined with the enjoyable and dynamic learning environment offered by surfing. Our collaboration with Lost Shore Surf Resort offers unique control of this environment to deliver the world's first wave pool specific intervention, and to make sure every participants gets the most out of their experience. After the 8 week programme surfers will graduate to our official Blue Light Surf Club so they can continue to surf and join a unique and valuable peer support network that will continue to grow. Why Blue Light?
Despite the hugely important role that emergency service and healthcare workers play in our society, their mental health is allowed to deteriorate in a manner not seen elsewhere in the general population, and tailored support is severely lacking.
• Police officers in the UK experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at a rate four times higher than that of the general population.
• One third of ambulance workers report some form of psychiatric morbidity.
• Research alongside fire service personnel highlights prevalence of poor mental health is accompanied by increased severity of symptoms.
• In the UK nurse suicide rates are 23% higher than the general population.
• Amongst emergency service workers, 69% have reported their mental health deteriorating since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
